"Introducing a Remedial Program that Actually Works"
This commentary highlights Cleveland State Community College's successful effort to revamp remedial math. The Progress of Education Reform: Community College Success
This ECS publication looks at the latest research on student success in community colleges and offers insights on the strategies that show the most promise in promoting greater educational attainment for community college students.

Key Findings from Spring 2008

  • After the first of three semesters for each pilot project, three of the six pilot projects reported improvement in learning and retention, as well as reduced costs.
  • Four out of the six pilots needed to identify a new registration process and track student data manually because the new BANNER data management system could not accommodate all the needs.
  • Several Tennessee Board of Regents colleges and universities that submitted proposals, but did not get funded as a pilot site, have used their proposals as the basis for institutionally funded redesign efforts.
  • Initiative has shifted purpose of developmental studies from remediating past deficiencies to preparing students for academic success in postsecondary education.
  • Pilot projects report increased student and faculty engagement, more flexible scheduling, improved attitudes among students and faculty, and a greater focus on individual needs of students.
  • Improved attitudes existamong faculty and students toward the use of technology for instruction.
  • Project challenges include: providing effective advising, ensuring student access to financial aid, identifying optimal assessment tools and standards, reassigning staff and faculty workload, orientation and training for faculty and students using new technologies and processes, monitoring progress and analyzing data.
  • At the system level, challenges include: coordination and communication to maintain involvement and encourage input from all 19 TBR institutions.
